The Emergency Operations Center of the National Disaster Management Authority in Pakistan has warned of urban flooding in many areas of the country and has directed all relevant departments to take precautionary measures.

The National Emergency Operations Center on Saturday has forecast thundershowers in South and Northeast Punjab and Northeast Sindh in the next 24 hours, raising the possibility of urban flooding in these areas.

The announcement of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has stated that there is a possibility of rains in some places in the districts of Potohar, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Sahiwal and Gurdwanah, while Bahawalpur, Multan, Dera Ghazi. Heavy rains are predicted in Khan.

Similarly, the districts of Sindh are Karachi, Hyderabad, Mithi, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Matiari, Jamshoro, Umarkot, Tharparkar, Khairpur, Thatta, Badin, Chur, Padaidan, Sajawal, Tando Allah Yar, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad. And heavy rain is likely in Dadu.

At least 30 people have died in heavy rains in Pakistan this week, while Lahore, the second largest city, has been drenched in its heaviest rainfall in four decades.

According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, 12 children are among the two dozen people who lost their lives due to rains and floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for the last three days.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said, ‘Directions have been issued to all concerned departments to take necessary precautions to mitigate the possible effects of floods and severe weather.

‘Urban flooding is likely in the affected areas and the affected population is advised to avoid flooding and seek shelter away from flooded areas.’

According to the instructions issued by the NDMA: “All concerned departments should ensure that roofs and windows are properly sealed to prevent water leakage, drains to prevent pooling of water and Clean up the drainage system, save what’s out there.’

Spokesperson PDMA said in a statement that there are chances of rains in most of the districts of Punjab in the next 24 hours. This series of monsoon rains will continue till August 6. The flow of water in all the rivers and barrages of Punjab is normal, but there is low level flood in Tarbela, Kalabagh and Chashma in Indus River.

Spokesman Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Chaudhry Mazhar while talking to Independent Urdu said that there is a possibility of medium to high level floods in the river hills due to rain in Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur in the next 48 hours.

Due to which the nearby settlements of the cities are also feared to be flooded. Arrangements have been made in view of possible flood situation. The water level in Mangala Dam is 61%, Tarbela is 81%.

Meanwhile, DG PDMA Irfan Kathia said that the water level in the Indian dams on Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers is up to 43%. PDMA control room and district emergency operation centers are monitoring the situation 24/7. ‘

He said that ‘medium to high level flood rails are expected in the hill torrents of Punjab. High level flood situation may occur due to rains in mountainous areas of Mount Sulaiman. During the next 72 hours, there is a possibility of moderate to high level flooding in the rivers of Dera Ghazi Khan region.

On the other hand, Commissioner Dera Ghazi Khan has issued an alert to the concerned DCs and administration. In which PDMA Punjab Irrigation Department, Health Department, Rescue 1122, Livestock and other administrations have been instructed to complete advance arrangements.

According to officials, more than 1,700 people were killed in Pakistan after unusually heavy rains in 2022 due to floods in many parts of the country, while about $30 billion in damage was caused.
