The Terneuzen lock complex will be closed to navigation from Thursday evening in order to facilitate the evacuation of water via the Ghent-Terneuzen canal, reports the agency which manages the waterways in Flanders (Vlaamse Waterweg).
For the past week, the agency has been working with the Netherlands to drain additional water from Flemish rivers at an accelerated pace due to severe weather.
“The floods in West and East Flanders are significant and all the authorities concerned are making immense efforts on the ground to avoid a worsening of the situation,” explains Flemish Minister of Mobility Lydia Peeters. “International cooperation has made a significant contribution to flood control in recent days and should not be underestimated. Thanks to this cooperation, we can divert a significant quantity of water from the north of France, via the Lys and the Haut-Escaut, to Terneuzen. This gives us additional buffer capacity. »
