Flood Control and International Cooperation in West Flanders

For the past week, the agency has been working with the Netherlands to drain additional water from Flemish rivers at an accelerated pace due to severe weather.

“The floods in West and East Flanders are significant and all the authorities concerned are making immense efforts on the ground to avoid a worsening of the situation,” explains Flemish Minister of Mobility Lydia Peeters. “International cooperation has made a significant contribution to flood control in recent days and should not be underestimated. Thanks to this cooperation, we can divert a significant amount of water from the north of France, via the Lys and the Haut-Escaut, to Terneuzen. This gives us additional buffer capacity.”

Spectacular images demonstrate the extent of the floods affecting the north of the country.
