AZ has fallen into a slump after the strong start to the season. After last week’s loss against FC Utrecht (1-2) and the anticipated European defeat at Athletic Club (2-0), the Alkmaarders lost tonight at Fortuna Sittard: 1-0.

Rodrigo Guth headed the winning goal against the ropes from a corner in the 78th minute.

Due to the defeat, AZ fails to level with FC Utrecht in the Premier League. AZ remains third with sixteen points from eight games.

In the absence of captain Jordy Clasie and veteran Bruno Martins Indi, the only 24-year-old Sven Mijnans was the oldest player at AZ. The midfielder also wore the captain’s armband. The young AZ was dull in Limburg and simply not good enough.

Four times the aluminum

Fortuna left back Jasper Dahlhaus hit the post hard and AZ escaped again just before half time. Due to a foul by Maxim Dekker on Makan Aïko, the home team was awarded a penalty. Alen Halilovic missed the opportunity and hit the post.

The aluminum was also tested after rest; Ryan Fosso on one side and Zico Buurmeester shot at the intersection on behalf of AZ on the other side.

The home team ultimately received reward for their work through defender Guth. Samuel Bastien took the corner and the Fortuna defender headed in.
