Flemish Nationalist Reforms and the MR: A Comparison of Socio-Economic Policies in Belgium

The reforms advocated by the Flemish nationalist group are similar to those defended, on the French-speaking side, by the MR. This concerns in particular employment with more severity in relation to the unemployed, compared to FOREM (Walloon Office for Vocational Training and Employment) and its Flemish counterpart the VDAB. The Reform Movement, a natural ally of the N-VA, is however not politically.

Bart De Wever specifies: “for the socio-economic aspect we are very close to the MR“. “But Mr. Bouchez only represents 20% of Wallonia. He is swimming in the Red Sea and I understand that he wants to cling to the Flemish boat to have a more right-wing, more center-right management..”A desire that he can understand from the MR’s point of view,”but that’s not my problem. I note that 80% of Walloons do not vote for the MR. So for me, the idea is to make an agreement with these 80%, to organize confederalism. It is not my task to impose on Wallonia a management for which they did not vote.”

Thomas Gadisseux, however, reminds him that this option had been chosen in 2014 with Charles Michel. Should we conclude from this that this is not possible now with Georges-Louis Bouchez? “We did it in 2014, in fact, because community was impossible at that time“, confirms Bart De Wever. But he adds that during a congress of his party, “I clearly told my members: the goal is to govern Belgium in the Flemish way for five years. But the biggest goal behind that is to convince the Walloon left that the Belgian system can also turn once morest them“This should encourage, he said, the Walloons to start community negotiations.”I noticed in 2019-2020 that we succeeded. We had very open discussions at that time with the PS, on the future of Belgium.”

Negotiations that the N-VA hopes to continue in 2024 with the PS? The N-VA aims for a Walloon left, “all parties, except the MR“, specifies Bart De Wever.
