The Flemish government announced on Friday that it would like 1,600 Dutch-speaking students to start medical studies in the next university year. The two responsible ministers Ben Weyts (N-VA) and Hilde Crevits (CD&V) asked in a letter to their federal colleague, Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit), to adapt the federal quota to this wish.
Frank Vandenbroucke had previously indicated that he wanted to increase the quota, approximately to the same level. The quota of the number of medical students determines how many medical graduates can obtain an Inami number upon graduation. The federal planning commission had issued an opinion providing for a quota of 2029 doctors: 1144 for Flanders and 929 for the Wallonia-Brussels Federation using a distribution key of 55-45. The increased number requested by the Flemish government is in line with the old distribution key, which was 60-40. Mr. Weyts and Mrs. Crevits, respectively Ministers of Education and Welfare, formally asked Mr. Vandenbroucke on Friday to adjust the quota, by means of a royal decree which must be taken before June 1.
“We only rely on our fair share, calculated on the basis of our population and our care needs“, underlined Mr. Weyts. “These care needs are significant, in part because of the historical shortage of doctors and dentists. We will now eliminate this shortage at a rapid pace“There is a distinction between the federal quota, which refers to medical graduates, and the starting quota, which determines how many students are allowed to start classes following the entrance exam.
