Playwright Vincent Stuer is the first declared competitor to Tom Ongena, the interim president of the Open VLD.

The Flemish playwright and opinion leader Vincent Stuer announced his candidacy for the presidency of the Open VLD on Saturday in the daily Het Laatste Nieuws. He presents himself as the first contender to Interim President Tom Ongenaappointed in early July following the sudden departure of Egbert Lachaert.

“We cannot go to the next elections with the current leadership of the party”

Vincent Stuer has been a member of the Open VLD since 1999. The author notably wrote speeches for Karel De Gucht and Guy Verhofstadt.

“These are people with whom I have worked for a long time. I have nothing once morest them personally, but we cannot go to the next elections with the current leadership of the party”, he declared in Het Laatste Nieuws.

“A change of power is needed, following losing elections five times in a row with the same people. If we don’t renew now it will be too late. The Open VLD is going through an existential crisis: we must do everything now to remedy it.”

Candidates for the presidency of the Open VLD have until September 17 to present themselves. A Congress will then be organized on September 23.

“Our members are faced with a dilemma: out of loyalty, they don’t want to alienate the management, but at the same time, they hope that someone will shake up the party. I want to be that person,” said Mr. Stuer.
