Eight days after the Russian invasion of Kyiv, more than a million people have fled Ukraine in self-defense. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reported on Thursday that 2% of Ukrainians have been displaced. According to the World Bank, the country had a population of 4.4 crore at the end of 2020. The exodus will continue and at least 4 million people will seek refuge in other countries, the report said.

NATO is also responsible

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishina has blamed NATO for the bloodshed in Ukraine. It is a crime to be inactive despite knowing that ordinary people, including children, will be killed.
NATO is responsible for the bloodshed of young children and their parents who die within days of birth. “NATO is not ready to declare Ukraine a no-fly zone, despite assurances of Russian airstrikes,” he said.

ASEAN, an organization of Southeast Asian nations, has called for an immediate end to “military atrocities” in Ukraine. He also promised the assistance of ASEAN diplomats in talks to resolve the issues between Moscow and Kiev. Meanwhile, the UN Human Rights Commission is organizing a debate on the Russia-Ukraine war. Friday’s vote on whether to set up an expert panel to investigate human rights abuses during the war. Russia and Ukraine are members of the commission.

Israeli Prime Minister Neptune Bennett has called on the two countries to resolve their differences through dialogue. Bennett had earlier said he was ready to mediate the talks. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Oban also offered to mediate.

UN says 227 killed

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights says 227 people have been killed and 525 wounded in Ukraine’s war so far this week. The actual death toll will increase. The death toll from shelling and airstrikes from artillery and multi-launch rocket systems has risen, the group said. But according to the UN Human Rights Watch, 752 civilians were killed. Ukraine says more than 2,000 civilians have been killed.

Russia and Ukraine have different claims about manslaughter. Ukraine says 9,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded. It also claimed to have destroyed 217 tanks, 90 artillery pieces, 31 helicopters and 30 aircraft. Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov denied the allegations. Their 498 soldiers were killed. More than 1,500 people were injured, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday. Konashenkov said more than 2,870 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed, more than 3,700 wounded and 572 captured by Russia.

Russia must step down: General Assembly

The world community at an emergency meeting convened by the UN called on Russia to immediately withdraw from military action against Ukraine. A resolution condemning the military move was passed in the General Assembly. He also condemned Belarus’ participation in the war. The resolution was approved by 141 countries in the 193-member UN General Assembly. Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Syria and Eritrea opposed the resolution. Thirty-five countries left, including India, Iran, China and Pakistan. This was the 11th emergency meeting in the history of the General Assembly.
The vote, which began on Monday, was taken on Wednesday. More than 100 countries have stated in the General Assembly that Russia’s attack on Ukraine is unjustified. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate end to the military crackdown. India has expressed concern over the current situation in Ukraine.

Finland and Sweden leaning towards NATO

Finland and Sweden express interest in becoming part of NATO alliance. Following the Russian occupation of Ukraine, there has been a shift in the position of the countries that have so far gone non-aligned.
More than 50 percent of Finns polled last week by a Finnish broadcasting company agree to join the Western military alliance.

This is the first time Finland has made such a comment. Last week, the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed concern over US efforts to drag Finland and Sweden into NATO. The governments of Sweden and Finland have retorted that they will not allow Russia to dictate its security policy.

China has not said so

China has denied allegations that it asked Russia to postpone military action in Ukraine until after the Winter Olympics. Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said the news, published by the New York Times, was false. It is a despicable way of distracting and blaming from the real subject. The reason for the war is the US provocation that Ukraine will grant NATO membership. Wenbin said those responsible for the crisis should work to find a solution without blaming others.
