“Flashing Green Lights for Firefighters: The Vias Institute’s Pilot Project”

2023-05-17 09:43:15

The Vias traffic institute launched a special pilot project in April on flashing green lights installed on windshields. You don’t know what it is? This flashing green light is in fact installed in the firefighters’ personal cars, so that they are recognizable by road users when they have to go to the station for an emergency intervention.

The pilot project will last a total of eight months, indicate our colleagues from HLN. It started a few weeks ago. The aim of the project for the Vias Institute is to study the effect of these fires on arrival times and the impact on the feeling of safety of volunteer firefighters.

Four areas were chosen to test the novelty with firefighters. These are the Luxembourg relief zone, that of Walloon Brabant, that of Campine and finally the East relief zone, in eastern Flanders. A total of 20 volunteer firefighters are participating in the pilot project.

This light placed on the volunteers’ windshield is a “courtesy light”. This therefore does not give the car priority vehicle status. Firefighters must continue to obey traffic laws.
