Lightning delivery: That’s what it’s all regarding

  • If you want to receive your product on the same day, you can order fast delivery in Switzerland.

  • At Digitec Galaxus, the delivery option is being used more and more.

  • However, there are major regional differences.

A new TV for the upcoming weekend or a popcorn machine for the home cinema evening the next day? Sometimes things can’t go fast enough. This also applies to online orders. Over a quarter of all buyers have their package sent via lightning delivery.

This is the result of statistics published by Digitec Galaxus, which analyzed all orders between July 2023 and February 2024.

The result shows: out of 100 orders, 27 come via lightning delivery, i.e. on the same day.

The younger, the faster it has to be

There are big differences between the age groups. The rate of lightning deliveries is particularly high among those under 20 years old. Around 41 percent of boys order their products via same-day delivery.

As you get older, the need to receive the goods on the same day also decreases.

Spontaneity before the weekend

Customers stock up on products, especially before the weekend. The online retailer receives most same-day delivery orders on Friday.

If you order following eleven o’clock on Saturday or on Sunday, you won’t receive your products until Monday evening. The quota is correspondingly low on these days.

Things have to be done fastest in Zurich

In German-speaking Switzerland, products are more likely to be ordered via quick delivery. Three out of ten customers in the canton of Zurich select the option following confirming their shopping cart.

The Romands take things much more comfortably. Peter Weingartner, who as Leader First & Last Mile is responsible for the delivery of parcels from Digitec and Galaxus, sees upward potential: “We have only been offering lightning delivery in French-speaking Switzerland since the end of October 2023.”

Weingartner assumes that the rate will increase in the future, but: “The Romands will probably never come close to the numbers of the harassed Zurich residents.”

There are only small differences between city and country – and also between the genders.

Impatient Dübendorfers

Differences in purchasing behavior can also be seen when broken down by postal code. The postal codes in the immediate vicinity of a branch have lower speed delivery rates.

“If I can pick up my order from the branch on the same day, then that also seems to be very attractive for our customers,” says Weingartner.

The city of Dübendorf achieved a record rate: customers there would like to receive 45 out of 100 orders on the same day. At the bottom is the postal code 4051 in the city of Basel. Only three percent of the parcels arrive there via lightning delivery.

Other online retailers also offer the option of receiving parcels on the same day. For example Brack. But the rate there is significantly lower: “In relation to all BRACK.CH orders in 2023, around half a percent of them were same-day orders.”

The postal service does not want to publish exact figures. The offer of same-day services is very much appreciated by customers, but: “The vast majority of postal parcels are still sent as ‘classic’ priority or economy parcels.”
