Flanders has issued an unfavorable opinion on the new permit for Liège-Bierset airport, Environment Minister Zuhal Demir said on Tuesday in response to a question from MP Inez De Coninck (N-VA). The Walloon government is studying the permit application for the airport expansion projects. Residents, neighboring municipalities of Flemish Limburg but also Dutch have expressed their opposition on behalf of the noise pollution that would be generated.
The Flemish government is also concerned regarding the noise impact. Sound sensors have been installed but, in the current environmental study report, there is no trace of an effect in Flanders. The Minister, of Limburg origin, however judged that an in-depth addition to the impact study was necessary. It awaits the decision of the Walloon government but does not exclude an appeal if necessary.
