It’s a little music that rises gently to a year of the probable “mother of all elections”. Faced with economic and social challenges, Flemish policies require institutional reform. Since social consultation is sclerotic and progress is minimal in terms of employment, taxation and pensions, they want more levers to act concretely and quickly in Flanders. Opposite, Francophones justify themselves, victimize themselves or repeat promises. Three untenable attitudes.
Wallonia and Brussels must put an end to this form of fatalism which paralyzes them. The French-speaking political class must fight inertia and dare to change its political culture. Even the Flemish socialists of Vooruit understood that the left had to rehabilitate the value of work and stimulate the spirit of enterprise. Two concepts in very poor condition on the French-speaking side.
To position oneself ideologically in relation to the criticisms of Flanders will not lead to anything. These are regions that need to be straightened out and the statistics that need to be improved. Today, the Flemish movement is only a shadow of itself. After winning several trophies, its linguistic claims have become cheesy or inaudible. On the other hand, it requires new transfers of skills. And this, despite the difficulties of digesting the latest state reform and despite the doubts regarding the real relevance of confederalism. But as long as the indicators draw widening gaps, the temptation will remain. It will even get stronger.
Unattractive and threatened with bankruptcy, Wallonia has seen foreign investment drop by 42% over one year. Disastrous. Its activity rate remains far too low, its budgetary trajectory uncertain and the weight of the administration and public expenditure unjustifiable.
The institutional cannot be the core of future and interminable governmental negotiations. We need a profound managerial revolution. The stakes in terms of purchasing power, public deficit, fiscal stability, economic recovery and the environment deserve all the attention and all the energy. “Get up Wallonia! ”, a slogan with no future? Absolute urgency forbids it.
