Seventeen residents of a rest home in Geraardsbergen, in East Flanders, were evacuated Thursday after a police intervention in the morning as part of a judicial investigation. “The prosecution has ordered the evacuation of several residents who can no longer receive the care they deserve,” said mayor Guido De Padt.
They are 17 residents of Alegria Cohousing, formerly Résidence Beauprez, in Klakvijverstraat. “These are heavily dependent people, whose care and safety can no longer be guaranteed on site. The Grammont authorities are looking, with the families, for a new destination for them”, indicates the municipal council.
Fourteen of the 17 residents will be treated overnight in nearby hospitals. The other three have already found a new residence. The Residence Beauprez had lost its license as a rest home but the precise reasons for the police intervention are not yet known. Police and prosecutors declined to comment.
