Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó officially announced the major project with Arab investors to develop an entire district for 5 billion euros on Wednesday.
Péter Szijjártó received his counterpart Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in Budapest to advance the gigantic construction project on the site of the former Rákos marshalling yard. After signing the relevant documents, Szijjártó spoke of a “flagship project”, which he commented with the words: “For five billion euros, a completely new district is being built on what is now a neglected site.” The real estate developer Eagle Hills will draw up a complex development plan for the project Present terrain not far from Heldenplatz. The investment will fulfill a variety of functions with a view to the overall economy and the capital’s real estate market, tourism and sport.
A concrete desert “conjured up” in Belgrade
The Budapest city leadership under Párbeszéd politician Mayor Gergely Karácsony has expressed serious concerns since the first rumors regarding the “Mini Dubai” construction project began to leak. The city father advocates a green, livable living environment. In this sense, Karácsony welcomes the fundamental rehabilitation of the now derelict site of the MÁV state railways. However, like all opposition parties and some Fidesz politicians, he radically rejects a concrete desert like the one the same Arab investor “conjured up” in the Serbian capital.
In addition, the city leadership immediately expressed concerns that skyscrapers might impair Budapest’s cityscape to such an extent that its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site would be in jeopardy. When the left-liberal news portal 24.hu first reported on the construction plans at the end of November, the mayor of Budapest’s “spontaneous” reaction on social media was: “Have they all gone crazy?”
