In the United States, an eagle owl that escaped from a zoo in New York a year ago is a hot topic.

No one expected owls to survive in New York, the largest and most complex city in the world, but the fairytale-like scenes of owls appearing throughout the city are capturing people’s hearts.

Correspondent Kang Na-rim reports from New York.

An apartment emergency staircase in Manhattan, New York.

An eagle owl sits with its golden eyes blinking.

It even has a name. This is Flacco.

″There is an eagle owl, Flaco, sitting on the fire escape of my house. You look healthy. It’s really cool.″

Flacco, who lived at the Central Park Zoo, succeeded in escaping in February last year when someone drilled a hole in his cage.

Within a week, he was seen catching and eating a rat in a park, and a few months later, he made eye contact with a person at an apartment window.

″It’s so beautiful…it’s sitting there watching us.″

It has also appeared on crosswalks in the middle of the city and has expanded its reach throughout Manhattan.

“People didn’t expect Flacco to survive, but not only did he survive, he thrived and now moves around Manhattan like his own home.”

Mysterious sightings of a gigantic eagle owl, reaching 2 meters in length when spread, began to appear in downtown New York, and within a year, Flacco had become a celebrity.

″It’s like magic. It’s great to share this experience with others and show them that this is possible.″

In the end, a petition was launched by New Yorkers asking not to capture Flacco, and the zoo eventually stopped its attempts to capture him.

There is a lot of support and cheers for the survival story of an eagle owl that found freedom in New York by learning how to hunt on its own following being confined in a narrow cage at a zoo for 13 years.

“Flaco survived on his own without any help from his parents. I think many people, especially New Yorkers, relate to it because of its vitality.″

The fairytale-like story of an owl escaping from a zoo, surviving in the city, and bringing comfort to people has captured the hearts of people living in New York, the most glamorous city in the world, but also the hardest to live in.
