The Professional Refereeing Department (PRD) wanted to set ambitious goals for the future following a difficult regular season. The director of the PRD Peter Willems notably recognized some “big mistakes“recently and said he wanted to do them”disappear.“
The new director of the refereeing department is especially ambitious for the next season.
“We will launch a positive and ambitious plan, keeping what is good and improving what can be improved. In the long term, we want to achieve 90% correct decisions on the pitch and 99% following VAR intervention. Today we are at 87.2% on the pitch and 94.5% following the VAR intervention. During the last play-offs, 93% of the decisions made on the pitch were correct, which proves that we can improve.“
To reduce the number of errors, Willems put forward a few ideas. “There might be technological advances, in the way the lines are drawn for example. Existing protocols and processes also need to be better applied. It will also be necessary to examine, in the long term, whether we wish to work with professional referees. Between semi-professional referees, assistants and VAR, the puzzle is sometimes difficult to put together today. Finally, communication should be improved and spectators better informed during matches.“
The CEO of the Belgian Union Piet Vandendriessche announced that he had “makes refereeing one of his priorities following a period of turbulence“. He also defended the referees.
“They are professionals who give the best of themselves every week. They remain people who try to judge every situation correctly, but unfortunately make mistakes from time to time. We strive to avoid these errors as much as possible in the future.“
