Joris, 5 years old, son of two volunteer firefighters, suffers from spinal cord aplasia. To survive, the little boy needs a bone marrow donation from a compatible donor.
If you’re healthy and between the ages of 18 and 35, you may be able to save Joris, a five-year-old boy who suffers from aplastic anemia, a rare disease that results in the inability of the bone marrow to produce normally blood cells. A bone marrow donation to help the child, who lives in Cours, in the Rhône department, is therefore necessary.
“At first, we are told of the disease, which is already difficult to take. Secondly, we are told that they will test us and his sister to see the accounts, but she is not compatible” , explains his mother, Charlotte.
“There, we question the national and international file. And there is no donor! Joris has fairly rare genes and there is no 100% compatible donor,” she adds.
“Without a transplant and without a transfusion, today, Joris will not be able to live”
Joris’ mother therefore launched a call for donations to find a compatible donor. “Without a transplant and without a transfusion, today, Joris will not be able to live”, she summed up a few days ago at the microphone of France Bleu.
While waiting for a compatible donor, the little boy has already received 11 transfusions. For regarding forty days, he has been undergoing heavy treatment to curb the disease.
“The ‘little warrior’ is in a sterile room and under pressure so that no microbes can enter it. His parents must wear a blouse, gloves, a charlotte and a mask when they go to see him”, summarizes the local media .
To help his mother and father, who are both volunteer firefighters, with their daily logistics (trips to the hospital and accommodation costs, in particular), a kitty has been set up.
How to become a donor?
Bone marrow donations are important for treating very serious illnesses such as leukemia or other illnesses in adults and children alike. In most cases, bone marrow donation is done by blood collection. The sample can also be taken from the bone marrow cells in the pelvic bone.
Pour become a potential donor, you must be between 18 and 35 years old at the time of your registration on the list. However, you can remain registered and make a donation up to the age of 60.
You must also not be affected by certain health problems such as a heart condition or back-lumbar problems (the complete list is available ici). A saliva or blood sample is taken at the end of registration to identify compatibility with another patient.
