212 kilometres, 5,600 meters of elevation, five passes (Couillole, Cime de la Bonette, Allos, Champs and Valberg), three of which are over 2,000 meters: this is the extremely generous program of the Ultra Bonette, the new cyclosportive, which will start from Valberg on Sunday August 27. This high mountain race offers even more elevation than the queen stage of the Tour de France, with the Col de la Loze (5,400 meters). “There are already quite a few cyclosportives, thanks to the dynamics of the Challenge des Alpes-Maritimes”, explains Christophe Menei, one of the organizers of the event. “
Because of the Covid, we had to stop the Mercan’Tour Bonette. We wanted to resume part of the route, but making it even more difficult, with a complete crossing of the Mercantour”.Cyclists will still go up to the Cime de la Bonette, the highest road in Europe (which culminates at 2,802 meters), but will also have to climb the Cols d’Allos and des Champs, which also exceed 2,000 meters, before a final ascent to Valberg. “ It’s more of a hike than a cyclosportive”,details the organizer. “
The runners will still have a chip, GPS tracking, for security reasons, but the goal will be above all to finish.
Bonus points for the Challenge The runners will pass by the Cime de la Bonette.
(Photo R.R.).Bonus points for the Alpes-Maritimes Granfondo challenge will however be awarded to finishers. “ There will be three categories, ”Bonette gold, silver and bronze” depending on the time”.A time barrier will be put in place and if the runners cannot keep up the pace or are too tired, they will have the possibility of taking an alternative route, where the Col de la Cayolle will replace Allos and Champs. “This will make 1000 meters less elevation and 190 km (instead of 212 km)”
. A route that is far from accessible to everyone. Despite this profile, the organizers received a warm welcome from the runners, since 150 climbers had already taken their bibs, before the change of date. Ultra cycling has found its audience.
