On Tuesday, five opposition mayors from Trujillo state announced their full support for the candidacy of Nicolas Maduro after declaring independence.
In a joint statement, mayors Wilmer Delgado (Monte Carmelo municipality), Dilcia Rojas (Campo Elías municipality), Heriberto Materan (Motatán municipality), Francisco Aguilar (Andrés Bello municipality) and Cervando Godoy (José Felipe Márquez Cañizales municipality) expressed that “the path for Venezuela should not be marked by violence, hatred or division among Venezuelan citizens.”
Five mayors of Trujillo support Maduro’s candidacy
For 25 years we have experienced constant political conflict that has only brought poverty, suffering and division to the Venezuelan people. As an opposition, we have not demonstrated the necessary political maturity nor have we been up to the challenge of change.
After extensive consultations between ourselves, our families and our political teams, we have decided to separate ourselves from the Command with Venezuela and reject María Corina Machado’s policy of humiliation and imposition.
“Today, we commit to proclaim our independence and support the candidacy of Nicolás Maduro Moros. We seek to change our reality through peace, without shedding blood, to give Venezuelans back their quality of life and their hope for a better future,” part of the statement reads.
