Gaspard Ulliel, who died on Wednesday January 19 at the age of 37, had been noticed while still a teenager by Michel Blanc, who had given him a role in his choral film Kiss whoever you want in 2002. He had his first major role alongside Emmanuelle Béart in The Lost by André Téchiné. A role that earned him a second César nomination for best male hope (he had already been nominated for Kiss whoever you want by Michael Blanc). He is a strange and illiterate teenager, who meets on the roads of the exodus of June 1940 a teacher who flees with her two children and with whom he settles in an abandoned house.
A Long Engagement Sunday (2004)
Gaspard Ulliel finally receives the César for best hope for A long engagement Sunday by Jean-Pierre Jeunet in 2005. He plays a First World War soldier whose fiancée (Audrey Tautou) refuses to believe that he fell at the front, clinging to his intuition that he is still alive.
Saint Laurent (2014)
Gaspard Ulliel, whose two parents are stylists, plays Yves Saint Laurent in the biopic directed by Bertrand Bonello, which focuses on the years 1967-1976, his most important period. He was chosen by the director from a cast of twenty actors. For this role, he worked on his voice and his diction so that they resemble those of the famous couturier. He lost 12 kg so that his silhouette approaches that of Saint Laurent.
Just the end of the world (2016)
For Just the end of the world, Gaspard Ulliel receives the César for best actor. In this film by Xavier Dolan, he is a writer who returns to his native village following twelve years of absence, to announce to his family, with whom he has cut ties, that he will soon die. The reunion with his mother, his brother and his sister revives memories, feelings, resentments and tensions.
Eva (2018)
In Eva by Benoît Jacquot, he is Bertrand, a promising writer, fallen under the spell of a mysterious femme fatale (Isabelle Huppert) who burst into his life. She will fascinate and obsess him, to the point of causing his downfall. For this role, Gaspard Ulliel told France 2 that he was “out of a certain comfort zone” and that we had “explored some new things”.
