MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Five people were killed and six injured in Australia following a car crashed into a pub terrace, authorities said Monday.
The 66-year-old driver of the BMW luxury sports utility vehicle was taken to hospital following the crash at the crowded Royal Daylesford Hotel brewery in the rural town of Daylesford, northwest of Melbourne, on Sunday night, police said. .
The driver suffered shock and minor injuries and remained under police surveillance, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said.
Police investigators were trying to determine how the car might have gone over the sidewalk and crashed into the area of tables next to the road. The driver tested negative for alcohol and his blood was being tested for other substances that might impair his ability, Patton said.
A child, two men in their thirties and a woman in her forties died at the scene. A teenage girl was airlifted to a Melbourne hospital, where she died on Sunday night.
Two children, ages 11 months and regarding 6 years old, were taken to hospitals and were in stable condition. Three adults remained in a Melbourne hospital, including a 35-year-old woman in intensive care.
Police had not yet questioned the driver, whose only record was speeding tickets. Investigators did not yet know if excessive speed was a factor in the crash, Patton said.
