Fitnesspark Malley in Prilly (VD) is closing its doors on September 30. Staff and members were informed last Wednesday. The site has represented “for several years a significant financial challenge”, according to its owner movemi, belonging to the Migros group. The Let’s Go channel takes up the torch.
“We have decided to abandon the current location of Fitnesspark Malley,” writes movemi on the club’s website. In particular, “disproportionate maintenance and infrastructure costs as well as the consequences of the pandemic”.
“Furthermore, compared to other studios, the number of members at Malley has been steadily decreasing rather than growing. Despite various optimization measures, we have not managed to achieve results to maintain a viable economic situation”, justifies the company, which has brought together the Activ Fitness and Fitnesspark brands under one roof since 2022.
Created in 2001, Malley’s studio, equipped with a swimming pool and wellness areas, presented itself as the “largest training room in Romandie”. It employs 55 people and has around 1,800 members.
Strong reactions
The announcement of the short-term closure of the place had the effect of a bombshell among the staff. “We were called for a session last Wednesday. We are in shock, we are lost regarding our future,” a collaborator told Keystone-ATS on Sunday. The news also provoked strong reactions on social networks. Many consider the method “unacceptable” and are worried regarding the employees.
Asked by Keystone-ATS regarding the suddenness of the announcement, movemi explains in particular that “the contracts between Let’s Go and the lessor were signed in the very short term, so that we unfortunately did not have the opportunity to communicate with a greater anticipation.”
The employer claims to “actively support the employees concerned in the search for a succession solution. We are in particular evaluating the possibilities within movemi, such as for example a transition to the Activ Fitness format”.
“In addition, surrounding Migros companies have been informed accordingly, so that as many of our employees as possible can be re-employed within Migros and partner companies.”
More in French-speaking Switzerland
Fitnesspark Malley was the brand’s only club in French-speaking Switzerland, the other sixteen being located across Sarine. “Looking at a short-term horizon, we are currently focusing in French-speaking Switzerland on the Activ Fitness format. However, we are constantly looking for potential sites in the region, and this applies to both formats,” explains movemi.
From October 1, 2023, Let’s Go takes over the installation and manages it autonomously.
