Fishermen and peasants encouraged to suspend activities on the Cuanza River – news

Staff from the Civil Protection and Fire Service continue to urge families involved in fishing and agriculture along the Cuanza River, in the municipality of Cacuso, to suspend activities while the Laúca dam gates are open.

The water discharge process opened last Friday, 5th, and which runs until March of the current year, aims to regulate the flow of the Cuanza River, due to the heavy rains in the coming months predicted by INAMET. Firefighters and technicians from the electricity production company (PRODEL) continue to advise residents of the neighborhoods of Ndomboya Pepe, Ngola-Dala, Quindondo, Nyangya-Pepe, Muta and Vila dos Pescadores to look for safe places while the process lasts.

According to the commander of the Civil Protection and Fire Service at Hidroeléctrica de Laúca, Caetano Benge, as a result of the campaigns and the families’ compliance with prevention measures, so far no material or human damages have been recorded. He stressed that, while this process is ongoing, families must comply with all recommendations and avoid going into the river. “During the period we raised awareness among the entire population and there was only a need to transport certain citizens who were along the river fishing”, he pointed out.

The interim municipal administrator of Cacuso, Guerrito Tomás, considered the situation calm, taking into account that so far no incidents have been recorded, as a result of the awareness-raising work. The head of the Ngola Dala neighborhood, António Manuel, reinforced the appeal to the population to stay away from the river for the next three months.
