First without independence for the center-right party

The center-right party “Democratic Union” which has been in power since 2016, is first in the parliamentary elections in Croatia but without independence, according to exit polls.

Specifically, the center-right party in Croatia reportedly occupies 58 of the 151 seats in the new parliament, against 44 of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), 13 of the far-right Movement for the Fatherland and 11 of the Environmentalists, in today’s (17/04/2024) elections.

In the 2020 elections, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) had secured 66 seats. In the first analyses, there is talk of a period of political instability that Croatia is entering, as the two largest parties seek to ally with forces that have different positions on several issues.

High inflation and corruption scandals in previous years have eroded the ratings of HDZ, which has dominated Croatian politics since the country’s independence in 1991.

The turnout of voters at the polling stations moved at high levels. An hour and a half before voting closed, turnout was estimated at 50.6% compared to 34.4% at the same time in the 2020 election.
