For the first time in the history of Pashto music, a singer has received a Ph.D degree from Peshawar University.

Rashid Ahmed Khan, a Pashto musician from village Jhanda in Swabi district residing in Peshawar, studied music in the Pashto Department of Peshawar University and received his PhD degree.

Rashid Ahmed Khan has been associated with Pashto music for the past 20 years.

He told Independent Urdu: ‘I really wanted to do some work on Pashto music at the literary level, because not so much work has been done on our Pashto music and if you look at music, very little work has been done in India and Pakistan. Yes, not much has happened, but Pashto music has lagged behind a lot.’

According to Rashid: ‘There are no authentic books on Pashto music, so I wanted to work on it.’

He said: ‘I had a great opportunity to get admission in the Pashto department and then I decided to do research on Pashto music, for which I am grateful to the chairman of the Pashto department and the administration of Peshawar University. That he allowed me to do research on Pashto music.’

38-year-old Rashid Ahmed Khan said that his research was on Pashto music and this research was done at PhD level for the first time, which has not been done before in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

He said that earlier people used to say about the famous Pashto singer Dr. Nashanas Ustad that he had a PhD in music but that was not true.

He said that this is the first PhD on music. ‘My main thesis in it is on the various schools of Pashto music, with a research chapter on our Yousafzai school. There is a chapter on the Kandahari school.’

According to him, these are all schools of thoughts of Pashto music, which he has clarified in his research, what is the difference between them.
