The compact SUV from Porsche impresses with top performance on the road – and off it.
When Porsche presents the third generation of the Macan at the end of January 2024, the compact SUV will be the second fully electric model from Zuffenhausen. Or more precisely, from Leipzig. The Macan has been rolling off the assembly line there since its market launch in 2014, alongside the also completely renovated Panamera. Even for a brand like Porsche that is used to success, there is a lot at stake. After all, the Macan has been by far the best-selling model for several years, with more than 86,000 units sold last year alone. When such a bestseller is electrified, interest is naturally enormous.
The security measures were correspondingly high at the exclusive preview to which the SN were invited to the Porsche Experience Center in Leipzig in November. Only prototypes in full camouflage were shown, and even these were not allowed to be photographed in advance. The real sensation, however, is not the design of the electric Macan, but rather its performance. Sitting in the passenger seat of professional drivers on the 3.7 kilometer long, factory-owned race track, you got an idea of what Porsche’s first fully electric SUV is capable of. Even though the Porsche officials kept the exact data and facts of the new hopeful a real state secret, it quickly became clear: In terms of performance, the Macan electric eclipses pretty much everything that is currently on our roads. The newly developed, permanently excited synchronous electric machines in series production are expected to deliver up to 450 kW of power and 1000 Newton meters of torque. The capacity of the new high-performance battery was also revealed: it will be 100 kWh gross, distributed across twelve modules, consisting of a total of 180 prismatic cells. If you can’t do much with it, rest assured: the comparatively compact battery is not only charged ultra-quickly thanks to 800-volt technology, but the space saved has also been used perfectly for installing rear-wheel steering. This makes the new Macan even more agile, on the racetrack as well as off-road. Because here too, in the 132 hectare off-road area, not far from the 32 meter high “diamond” building of the customer center, the Macan knew how to impress with its high-tech chassis. One of the highlights is the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, i.e. an electronically controlled differential lock on the rear axle. Prices and details coming soon here.
