Thursday will be stormy: The Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) has issued a storm warning. Sometimes gusts of up to 90 or even over 100 km/h sweep through the country. The fire brigades were already in action in the morning.

During the night on Thursday, the westerly wind increased in strength and it became stormy at times from the early hours of the morning. During the day, the highest wind peaks are expected around noon and in the followingnoon on Thursday. Widespread gusts of 90 km/h sweep through the country, especially in the Danube valley and in the Mühlviertel, peaks of around 100 km/h are also possible.

Power lines cut

The storm was also noticeable in Upper Austria in the morning. Fire brigades were alerted to storm damage, especially in the foothills of the Alps, but also in the Mühlviertel. Most of the cases involved fallen trees. Some of the trees also damaged power lines, for example in Tragwein in the Mühlviertel but also in Aschach an der Steyr.

The gusts reached speeds of almost 120 km/h in Kremsmünster and even 140 km/h on the Feuerkogel. More than 60 km/h were measured in Linz. According to Netz Oberösterreich, more than 15,000 households in Upper Austria were without electricity on Thursday morning. Laakirchen in the district of Gmunden and towns around Andorf in the Innviertel were affected, where a good 2,000 households were affected.

Stormy until Friday

Storm peaks of up to 110 km/h can also be present, according to the meteorologists. A hurricane is sweeping over the mountains at over 120km/h. Towards evening the wind gradually decreases, but can still blow strongly into the first half of the night on Friday. Forests, parks and avenues should be avoided. And the fire brigade also asks to refrain from driving that is not absolutely necessary.
