The American health authorities announced, this Tuesday, August 30, 2022, to have recorded the first death due to monkey pox in the State of Texas.

The American television channel “CBS News” reported, citing Texas health authorities, that the deceased lived in Harris County and suffered from a severe immune deficiency.

The same source said health officials are investigating the role of monkeypox virus in the death.

“Monkey pox is a serious disease, especially for people with compromised immune systems,” said Texas Department of Health Services Commissioner Dr. John Hellerstedt.

“We continue to urge people to seek treatment if they have been exposed to monkeypox or show symptoms of the disease,” he added.

Until August 16, 2022, 36,412 confirmed cases including 12 deaths and 179 other potential cases, have been recorded worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

Eight countries have reported 15 deaths from monkeypox since the virus spread around the world this year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States’ main health agency.

Monkeypox was first discovered in 1958, in a group of macaques (monkeys) that were studied in a laboratory for research purposes, hence its name.
