[가스신문 = 유재준 기자]On the 14th, Second Vice Minister Choi Nam-ho of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (Minister Ahn Deok-geun) attended the ministerial board meeting of the International Energy Agency (IEA), which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and agreed on a joint declaration to expand clean energy and establish energy security. did.

This joint declaration is the first agreement that recognizes the important role of nuclear power plants in reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and also reflects for the first time the need to promote the introduction of various carbon-free energy technologies suited to each country’s conditions. Through this, many countries, including Korea, which are trying to achieve carbon neutrality by utilizing carbon-free energy, have achieved very meaningful results.

At the Council of Ministers, government and leaders from all walks of life gathered to discuss energy cooperation plans, and Korea decided to contribute to the global clean energy transition based on its manufacturing technology and technology for commercializing carbon-free energy such as renewable energy, ESS, hydrogen, batteries, and nuclear power plants.

Vice Minister Choi met with IEA Secretary General Fatih Birol on the 13th (local time) and agreed to strengthen cooperation for a sustainable energy future. In addition, the IEA decided to undertake joint research with Korea on the conditions for using carbon-free energy in major countries.

Secretary-General Fatih Birol said: “To achieve net zero by 2050, we must rapidly improve energy efficiency and promote the adoption of carbon-free technologies, including renewable energy, hydrogen, ammonia, CCUS and nuclear power, but only in countries that commit to use nuclear power. “It is necessary,” he emphasized, adding, “I hope that the joint research on carbon-free energy between the IEA and Korea will be of great help in setting energy and climate goal paths for each country.”

Vice Minister Choi Nam-ho said, “Korean companies have manufacturing technology competitiveness in the fields of batteries, semiconductors, nuclear power plants, renewable energy, and hydrogen, so Korea will spare no effort and contribute greatly to establishing global energy security and accelerating the transition to clean energy.” He said, “I would like to express my gratitude to Director-General Fatih Birol for his leadership in ensuring that the IEA plays a key role in the clean energy transition.”
