In accordance with the provisions of the Political Constitution of Colombia, for a candidate to win in the first round, he must obtain half plus one of the votes. That is, 50 percent of the votes plus one, but if no candidate obtains said sum, “a new vote will be held three weeks later, in which only the two candidates who have obtained the highest votes will participate. ”, so says the political letter.
If that threshold is not exceeded, in this case, a second round will be held on June 19.
It is estimated that to win in the first round in 2022, a candidate would need more than 9.8 million votes. However, the sum might be higher since the National Registry, through the electoral census, indicated that there are more than 38 million Colombians eligible to vote this May 29.
