First organ ablation in Imaging Clinic

A successful organ and tissue ablation procedure was completed over the weekend in Neuquén, following meticulous and coordinated work between teams of professionals from the private and public spheres.

It was the first ablation in the Imaging Clinic of Leben Salud that made it possible to procure organs and tissues, which were immediately sent to various parts of the country and implanted in patients who were on the waiting list and needed a transplant to improve and ensure their quality of life.

The operation was carried out on Saturday, following the admission of a patient who unfortunately had very serious injuries. All medical care was provided to assist the man, who is regarding 45 years old, although it was later found that he was brain dead, it was reported.

For this reason, in a coordinated manner, a team of professionals from the CUCAI Neuquén, from the Castro Rendón Hospital, together with professionals who arrived from Buenos Aires from the Incucai and the staff of doctors from the Operating Room and Intensive Care of the Imaging Clinic of Leben Salud, were able to carry out the ablation.

“On Friday a patient was admitted in a coma and the rigorous procedure in these cases began. Incucai has a specific protocol, the Glasgow 7 subprogram, which exists within the framework of the Federal Organ Procurement Program, which is applied to neurocritical patients and are incorporated as potential donors”, explained the medical director of Clínica de Imágenes, Alejandra Olive. Histocompatibility studies are then carried out, parallel to the process, and thus it was possible to ablate the liver, kidneys and corneas.

“It was an extremely precise, serious and coordinated job that was achieved in conjunction with CUCAI of Neuquén, which provided a lot of support to the Guardia medical team and the patient’s family, at a time of so much pain,” Oliva explained.

Currently, some 6,940 people need a transplant to save their lives in the country. Of these, around 190 are patients from Neuquén.

INCUCAI protocols

Within the framework of the Federal Procurement Program, the Glasgow 7 Subprogram is applied. There, it is determined in which condition the person enters. According to national reports, of the patients who enter this protocol, 33% evolve favorably and obtain medical discharge.

“Another 33% die of cardiorespiratory arrest and can donate tissues, especially corneas, and 33% die of brain death, which are the patients who become potential organ donors,” explained Oliva, who highlighted the vital support of the team at CUCAI Neuquén, by Dr. Daniel Castro and Dr. Alejandra Polini.
