Around twenty candidates, including the outgoing president, are in the running for the presidential election scheduled for December 20 in the Democratic Republic of Congo at the same time as legislative, provincial and municipal elections. Who are the main presidential candidates? What are the issues ? Fred Bauma, the Executive Director at Ebuteli, Congolese Institute for Research on Politics, Governance and Violence was our guest.

Also in the news: in Senegal, Pastef (Ousmane Sonko’s party officially dissolved) has designated Bassirou Diomaye Faye as its presidential candidate. According to their press release, Ousmane Sonko himself endorsed this choice, the day following a Supreme Court judgment which further reduced his chances of being a candidate. Pastef therefore plays it safe by offering itself a plan B.

In the Central African Republic, MINUSCA, the United Nations mission in the Central African Republic, established since 2014, renewed its mandate for one year, now until November 15, 2024. This renewal was voted by 14 votes in favor. Russia abstained. The UN Security Council still maintains the number of blue helmets at more than 14,000 soldiers and more than 3,000 police officers.
