A first birth control pill for men is close to becoming a reality. Clinical tests with the novelty began in recent days and it stands out for several characteristics, such as not having hormones and being able to temporarily stop sperm production.

For now, the item is still called YCT-529, as it does not have a commercial name. It is being developed by the pharmaceutical company YourChoice Therapeutics and may end up becoming an effective and safe method of preventing pregnancy. A note was released regarding the medicine and the company’s CEO, Akash Bakshi talking regarding the subject:

YCT-529 blocks a protein — not hormones — to stop sperm production. We believe this will be more attractive to men, especially those who see pregnancy prevention as a shared responsibility.

In practice, the pill works as an alpha retinoic acid receptor inhibitor. In this way, it manages to prevent the process in which the receptor binds to the acid to temporarily produce sperm. Pre-clinical tests, in turn, were carried out on animals and showed promising results.

In other words, the drug was effective and was able to drastically reduce sperm counts in mice. In fact, the results showed an effectiveness of 99%. Now, the idea is that tests will also be carried out on human beings. Phase 1 will include 16 healthy men over 25 years of age.
