Shabana Mehmood, following taking the oath at a ceremony in London, said that the responsibility of being a pioneer in something is heavy but it can open doors for generations to come.
They pledged to defend the rule of law and uphold human rights at the international level. He also said that the judiciary must make decisions free from political pressure and undue influence, pledging to be champions of the rule of law during the ceremony at the Royal Courts of Justice.

In his address, he also spoke regarding his journey from working in his parents’ corner shop in Birmingham to his current role.

Who is Shabana Mahmood?
Shabana Mahmood was appointed Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice on July 5, 2024, according to Government.UK, the official website of the British government. She was elected Member of Parliament for Birmingham Ladywood in July 2024.
Shabana Mahmood was born on 17 September 1980 in Birmingham. His mother’s name is Zubaidah and his father’s name is Mehmood Ahmed. She lived with her family in Taif, Saudi Arabia from 1981 to 1986, before moving once more to Britain, where her father worked as a civil engineer in the desalination sector.

His mother worked in a corner shop that his family bought following returning to England. Her father became the chairman of the local Labor Party and as a teenager, Shabana Mahmood helped him campaign in local elections.

Mehmood studied law at Lincoln College, Oxford University where she was president of the Junior Common Room.
Shabana Mahmood is associated with the Labor Party and has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Birmingham Ladywood since 2010. She previously held various shadow junior ministerial and shadow cabinet posts under leaders Ed Miliband, Harriet Harman and Keir Starmer between 2010 and 2024.
