As part of the Sports Energy Sobriety Plan launched by the Ministry of Sports and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the LFP and French professional clubs are making the first assessment of the energy consumption of Ligue 1 Uber Eats and Ligue 2 stadiums. BKT.

To respond to measure 23, intended to “build a common frame of reference for sports structures”, the LFP entrusted the company A4MT with carrying out an inventory of the energy situation of the stadiums, which took the form of a ” Energy Stadium Sheet”, identical for each stadium used by Ligue 1 Uber Eats and Ligue 2 BKT clubs, analyzing 84 criteria, and drawn up in collaboration with professional clubs.

With more than 90% of the park studied (19 stadiums in Ligue 1 and 17 stadiums in Ligue 2) over the 2022/2023 season, the summary of the sheets makes it possible to establish the first inventory of fixtures of the energy consumption of professional football. The “energy” composite of a stadium hosting a professional football club has the following average characteristics:

23.5 large-scale events per season, including 20.8 home-club matches, plus 86 non-match day seminars.

Average energy consumption of 2,358 MWh (electricity + gas + district heating).

Average water consumption of 14,336 m³ per year.

The specificity of each enclosure led to a classification into 7 sub-categories, with specific characteristics (capacity, year of construction, eco-compatible operation, public or private management of the enclosure, etc.).

The study also highlights the action of professional clubs, in accordance with the objectives of the sobriety plan:

Heating / Air conditioning: average temperature of the offices and training center at 19.1°C; playgrounds at 9.3°C; domestic hot water at 55.1°C.

Lighting: 50% of stadiums already equipped with LED lighting for the playing area, allowing the lighting time and power to be adjusted before and following the match; generalization of LED lighting in Competition and VIP areas.

Efficiency of equipment: 86% of heating networks isolated and 56% equipped with a Technical Building Management tool.

Mobility: 41.7% of stadiums offer ticket holders free public transport, the frequency of which increases on 66.7% of match days.

Renewable energies: 10 stadiums have photovoltaic panels and 10 use urban heating networks.

Support, Training, Communication: 14 clubs have already carried out an energy audit and 19 carried out a carbon assessment; an “energy referent” is present in half of the clubs, which for 24 of them conducted a campaign on “eco-gestures” aimed at the general public.

This inventory carried out thanks to these “Energy Stages Sheets” constitutes a first key step to continue to progress in terms of energy sobriety. The second stage will be the generalization by professional clubs of carrying out energy audits of stadiums, a criterion integrated into the Club License. Still supported by A4MT, the LFP will soon provide clubs with a framework framework and the tools necessary to carry out these audits.

Associated with carbon footprints, these energy audits will make it possible to draw up energy sobriety action plans at stadium and club level.
