First International Congress of Divine Mercy in 83 years: Registration opens

Washington: American bishops have started registration to participate in the first International Congress of Divine Mercy following 83 years. The International Divine Mercy Congress will be held July 17-21, 2024 in Indianapolis. The website for the conference says it will be “a defining moment of our generation.”

The Congress is a five-day event consisting of prayers, speeches and liturgical celebrations. June 19, 2022 will mark the milestone of the bishops’ three-year national Eucharistic Revival Campaign.

The congress is expected to have a festive atmosphere similar to World Youth Day and 80,000 devotees are expected to attend the gathering. Next year’s Congress will be the 10th International Congress of Divine Mercy and the first since 1941.

The conference’s website explains that the conference “hopes to draw American Catholics into a deeper intimacy with our merciful Lord, allowing us to open our eyes and ignite our hearts with his love.”

The decision to take this initiative on the International Eucharistic Congress follows a 2019 Pew survey, says Bishop Andrew Cozens, chair of evangelization and catechesis for the American bishops in Crookston, Minnesota.

According to this survey, which is a response to a lack of faith among Catholics regarding the core tenets of the faith, only 31 percent of Catholics believe in the core tenets of their faith.

“We seek to invite people to a transformative encounter with Christ in the Holy Eucharist so that they can be healed, united and sent on a spiritual mission,” explained Bishop Andrew Cozens.
