Despite a month of October well underway and temperatures starting to drop, mosquitoes are still present in France. These pests are annoying with their unpleasant stings and their whirring sounds which can prevent you from falling asleep at night.
But it can go even further than simple annoyance. Indeed, certain species of mosquitoes can carry disease. This is particularly the case of the tiger mosquito, very present this summer in France, and still currently in certain French regions. This species is known to spread le chikungunya, le zika or even dengue fever. This latter pathology can, in certain cases, cause fatal complications. Which is worrying given the increase in cases in recent years, particularly so-called “native” cases. A new case has just been detected for the first time in Ile-de-France.
Dengue: what is an indigenous case as detected in Ile-de-France?
The dengue autochthonous cases was unveiled by ARS Île-de-France. The organization claims to have received a report on October 11, 2023, concerning a person residing in Limeil-Brévannes (94). “This case was confirmed by biological analyzes. The investigation carried out by the Agency’s services, with the Public Health France teams, made it possible to identify this case as the first indigenous case in Île-de-France“, reveals the ARS.
Generally speaking, dengue fever is caught following a mosquito bite, following a trip to a tropical country (where tiger mosquitoes originate). However, it can happen that a person is affected by being bitten in a region where the tiger mosquito is not nativewe then speak of indigenous case. “A case is designated as indigenous when the person contracts the disease without having traveled to an endemic area in the 15 days preceding the appearance of symptoms“, details the health organization. These cases continue to increase. In 2022, nearly 66 indigenous cases of dengue fever have been detected on the national territory. For the current year, nearly one thirty cases have already been recorded. The figures have continued to increase for several years, due to global warming.
Dengue fever: measures taken by the ARS to avoid other cases
To avoid new cases, the health agency has implemented several measures. First of all, the organization shares several tips to avoid further infections:
- Repeat the mosquito control treatment adulticide once.
- Actively search for other cases of denguewithin a radius of 150 meters around the initial case, encouraging people to be screened via biological sampling in the event of symptoms.
- Protect yourself from bites (wearing loose clothing, mosquito repellents, etc.).
- Inform health professionals and hospitals of the occurrence of a confirmed indigenous case of dengue so that they can be vigilant in the event of signs suggestive of dengue fever.
- Take action to limit the development of mosquitoes around your home : monitor water points, clean gutters, etc.
In addition, two mosquito control operations are planned in Limeil-Brévannes, where the indigenous case was detected. “These operations planned in Limeil-Brévannes, like the previous ones, aim to reduce the risk of spreading dengue, infectious disease, some complications of which can be severe. They respect the same conditions as those carried out in recent weeks in Île-de-France”, explains the health agency. This is in fact not the first time that this type of operation has taken place. The ARS mentions around twenty mosquito control operations in the Ile-de-France region since the start of the year. As for recent operations, the first was held on the night of October 15 to 16 and the second must take place on the night of October 20 to 21.
