Montreal (ots/PRNewswire) – Pyrowave, a Canadian technology company, is proud to announce that Michelin and Knauf Industries have successfully produced batches of finished elastomer and plastic products made from 100% styrene obtained using Pyrowave technology from plastic waste recycled in Canada was won. The tests carried out on the resulting elastomers showed that the quality and intrinsic properties are identical to those of elastomers made from fossil raw materials.
Tests for future incorporation of recycled content into tires
Michelin, a major player in sustainable mobility, has produced a four-ton prototype of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) at its factory in Bassens, France. The SBR is made from 100% Pyrowave recycled styrene and has passed all quality tests, no different from products made from styrene of fossil origin. These tests are an important milestone for further testing of Pyrowave recycled styrene in tires for laboratory and track applications to confirm performance evaluation.
More meaningful tests for food packaging applications
Knauf Industries, a major manufacturer of expanded polystyrene (EPS) packaging, technical parts and insulation products, can also produce expanded polystyrene parts made from 100% recycled styrene made using Pyrowave technology, in this case from the collection operated by Knauf Circular® in France. The resulting products have passed all laboratory tests for performance and quality and are equivalent to fossil styrene products. Product safety was also validated through migration tests, which confirmed suitability for use in food contact applications. This is further proof of the feasibility of a closed cycle for polystyrene using Pyrowave technology.
In both cases, the styrene used comes from recycled sources and the final product (EPS or SBR) contains 100% recycled styrene. The recycled styrene is included in the product so physical traceability is possible.
This announcement is part of the collaboration project launched in 2020 between Pyrowave and Michelin. Styrene has a lower carbon footprint than fossil styrene, according to a recent study Life cycle analysis emits around 82% fewer greenhouse gases and enables the use of plastic waste as a raw material.
The tests conducted by Michelin and Knauf Industries, respectively, using recycled styrene, are significant because SBR and EPS are engineering polymers used in industry. Since SBR and EPS production processes are relatively sensitive to contaminants, the success of these tests demonstrates the reliability of Pyrowave technology and that the recycled styrene produced can replace fossil styrene in engineering applications, thus offering significant opportunities, with performances comparable to new Polymers correspond.
The results of these tests are a real success for Pyrowave as they demonstrate, under prototype conditions, the preservation of product quality while reducing the environmental footprint.
