New York: The city’s first female police commissioner, Keith Sewell, has resigned following 18 months in office. Keychant Sewell, who made headlines as the city’s first female commissioner, emailed her resignation to department staff Monday followingnoon.

Sewell was the city’s 45th commissioner. Sewell was appointed to the position by Mayor Eric Adams. Adams, who was a captain in the New York Police Department, became mayor in January 2022. Before assuming office, he had vowed to induct a woman into the commissioner’s post if he took over. After that, Sewell was entrusted with the task and he kept his word. After Sewell took over, there was a big drop in some categories of crime in the city, including murder. Meanwhile, Sewell had to deal with the shooting of two officers in his first month in office.

Sewell was an officer who generally stayed away from the limelight. Adams was a man who took a strong stand once morest violence during his administration. Still, Sewell attended very few press conferences. At the same time, the main allegation was that Adams was managing the New York Police Department by appointing Sewell as commissioner. Meanwhile, 51-year-old Sewell has not revealed the real reason for her resignation.

Sewell has been with the Nassau County Police Department for 23 years and has worked as chief detective and more. She is the first female commissioner appointed to the New York City Police Department and the third African-American to hold the position. The New York Police Department has 35,000 uniformed officers and 18,000 civilian employees. Sewell succeeded Dermet Shea, who was appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2019.
