The United States has charged four members of Russian forces in Ukraine with war crimes once morest an American citizen, American judicial authorities announced Wednesday, saying they were the first prosecutions launched under the American law on war crimes of 1996. “The Department of Justice has initiated the first-ever prosecutions under the U.S. War Crimes Act once morest four members of the Russian-affiliated military forces for heinous crimes once morest a U.S. citizen”declared the minister Merrick Garland. He was speaking at a joint press conference with Homeland Security Minister Alejandro Mayorkas and FBI Director Christopher Wray.

According to the indictment published on Tuesday, the alleged acts, including torture and inhumane treatment, took place in April 2022 in the Kherson region, in southern Ukraine. The four members of the Russian or pro-Russian separatist forces, referred to by name only for two of them, kidnapped the victim, an unidentified civilian, in the village of Mylove and detained him for ten days, according to the same sources.

During this detention, the four defendants subjected him to interrogations, “tortured, threatened with sexual assault and execution”, and even carried out a mock execution, Mr. Garland said. They face three counts of war crimes: illegal detention, torture and inhumane treatment and face life imprisonment if arrested by the United States.

Department of Homeland Security agents traveled in August 2022 “to speak with a US citizen who had recently been evacuated from Ukraine, where he was living with his wife”explained Mr. Mayorkas, without specifying in which country this testimony had been collected.
