The new wax rules surprisingly lead to a disqualification in the first race. The fluorine values on Mowinckel’s skis were too high.
The FIS wanted to be cautious regarding the sanctions following fluorowax controls. But now the first athlete has already been disqualified in the first race of the new World Cup season. The two-time Olympic medalist Ragnhild Mowinckel from Norway is no longer allowed to start the second run of the giant slalom in Sölden. She would have started the second run (live on SRF from 1 p.m.) as 6th in the interim rankings.
Fluorine levels were detected on their head skis that were well above the limit. FIS race director Peter Gerdol confirmed this to SRF. Due to the clear test results following Mowinckel’s run, the officials had no choice but to disqualify the athlete.
This season, following much back and forth, the World Ski Association banned the environmentally harmful fluorine wax and is now checking this with tests.
Meanwhile, Head’s racing boss was incomprehensible following the test results. Rainer Salzgeber said opposite ORF, that he had no explanation for it. Just two days ago, everything was fine during a test measurement with the same wax mixture.
