First confirmation of Mpox infection in Nepal… “60-year-old foreign woman”
(New Delhi = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Young-hyun = Local media such as the Kathmandu Post reported on the 17th (local time) that the first case of MPOX (formerly known as monkeypox) was infected in Nepal.
Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population announced the previous day that a 60-year-old foreign national woman was confirmed to be infected with Mpox.
“The woman’s health is normal,” said Health Ministry spokeswoman Samir Kumar Adhikari.
“This woman has often visited many countries, including Nepal,” he added.
However, the health authorities did not disclose the nationality of the infected woman or information regarding the country she recently visited.
Mpox, which was an endemic disease in Africa, saw a sharp increase in the number of patients following an outbreak was reported in a non-African region in May last year.
Mpox often shows symptoms of a blistering rash, often accompanied by acute fever, headache, or muscle pain. Most West African-derived Mpox, which are occurring mainly in Europe and North America, heal spontaneously following 2 to 4 weeks, and the fatality rate is reported to be less than 1%.
Although the Mpox epidemic has been gradually slowing down due to vaccine distribution and quarantine efforts in each country, confirmed cases are steadily being reported.
The Kathmandu Post, citing United Nations (UN) statistics, reported that 87,000 people were infected with mpox around the world last year, and 112 of them died.
