First cases of RSV confirmed in children on the North Shore

Several parents told Macotenord.com that their child had been hospitalized in Sept-Îles for cases of respiratory syncytial virus. The CISSS de la Côte-Nord confirms that « we are starting to receive positive cases in the region ».

The Côte-Nord Integrated Health and Social Services Center told us last Friday not to report cases in the region of this highly contagious virus in toddlers.

However, several sources have confirmed to us in recent days, an increase in pediatric hospitalizations, especially in Sept-Îles.

Mylène Richard is one of the mothers who agreed to share her testimony to Macotenord.com. “My son was hospitalized for two days last week. He was positive for RSV. »

“Paediatrics is full. I can’t believe my child is the only positive for this virus. »

This Tuesday, November 22, the CISSS confirmed that, since Friday, the information had evolved on the side of Public Health. The first cases are thus confirmed but it is difficult to know the extent.

“It’s not like Covid-19 where we might give the number of cases in the region because everyone was getting tested. In the case of respiratory viruses, patients with symptoms are not all tested, ”says the Assistant to the CEO for communications of the CISSS Côte-Nord, Pascal Paradis.

Remember that RSV is a particularly virulent respiratory virus in young children. Combined with an epidemic of Covid-19 and Influenza, it creates emergency room congestion in several regions of Quebec.
