A first case of a swine flu virus has been detected in a human in the United Kingdom, the British Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) announced on Monday.

“UKHSA has detected a confirmed and isolated human case of influenza A(H1N2)v virus,” the agency said in a statement, adding that this is a “first” in the United Kingdom.
This case was detected “as part of the usual national surveillance” carried out by the health authorities, she further specifies, adding that the person concerned “suffered from a mild illness and made a full recovery”.
The source of this person’s infection “has not yet been determined and remains under investigation,” the UKHSA says.
“We are working to quickly trace close contacts (of the infected person) and reduce any potential contamination,” said Meera Chand, general director of incidents at the UKHSA.
The H1N2 virus is one of the main subtypes of swine flu viruses in pigs and occasionally infects humans, usually after direct or indirect exposure to pigs or contaminated environments, explains the British agency.
Around fifty cases of transmission of this H1N2 influenza virus to humans have already been detected worldwide since 2005.
Human cases of infection with swine influenza viruses are generally mild, although a few severe cases have been reported.
