On March 22, 2024, the Khanh Hoa Center for Disease Prevention and Control reported the first case of H5Nx infection (subtype not yet specified) in Vietnam this year. He is a university student, male, 21 years old (originally from Ninh Thuan Province, next to Khanh Hoa Province). The patient is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and on a ventilator. Public health authorities are investigating the source of the infection. Information from various media There were no reports of sick poultry or wild birds dying in the patient’s residential area. But samples of poultry including ducks have been collected to test for bird flu virus.
sequence of events
March 11, 2024: The patient had a fever and slight cough while studying at Nha Trang University. He took medicine himself, but his symptoms did not improve.
March 15, 2024: Patient returned home to Ninh Thuan. (regarding 35 km from Nha Trang) and received treatment at a medical center in the city.
March 16, 2024: The patient was transferred to the district hospital for treatment in the emergency department. and was sent to the infectious diseases department This is due to symptoms worsening with high fever, abdominal pain, and loose diarrhea.
March 17, 2024: The patient had severe symptoms and was transferred to the ICU at Khanh Wah Hospital. And samples were collected and sent for examination at the Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang.
March 20, 2024: The Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang reported positive results for avian influenza A(H5Nx) and the patient was quarantined for treatment at the hospital. The Khanh Wah Center for Disease Prevention and Control has disinfected the hospital. and contact tracing, consisting of approximately 20 medical service personnel in various departments and 4 close contacts of patients.
March 21, 2024: The Khanh Hoa Center for Disease Prevention and Control destroyed the living area of a patient at Nha Trang University and 66 students who were close contacts of the patient. Six sick people have been sent for testing for infection. Test results did not detect bird flu virus (avian influenza A) in all 6 people.
Additional information for surveillance
Relatively few cases of bird flu infection have been found in humans and there have been no indications of much human-to-human transmission. But it was found that the avian influenza virus has a very high chance of turning into a human-to-human infectious disease and causing widespread impacts. Although all six roommates’ contacts have returned negative results, continued contact tracing and additional searches are still required.
According to FAO (EMPRES-i: Global Animal Disease Information), on February 28, 2024, an outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza in poultry flocks was reported in Suoi Tien City. Located regarding 20 km from Nha Trang, the source of the outbreak is under investigation. The patient may get the virus from wild birds, poultry, as well as contact with contaminated environments.
Before that, there were reports of cases of H5N1 bird flu in Vietnam, most recently in October 2022, which was quite a long time from the previous report in 2014, at which time Vietnam had issued various measures and announcements for this.
