Kelag opened the first wind farm in Carinthia on the Steinberger Alpe and on the Soboth on Saturday. The wind farm comprises eight wind turbines with a total output of 26 MW. According to Kelag, this wind farm will generate around 60 million kWh of electricity per year, which corresponds to the needs of 17,000 Carinthian households.

“The Steinberger Alpe & Soboth wind farm is one of the first steps in the energy transition in Carinthia, the energy future has begun,” said Kelag board member Danny Güthlein, according to a broadcast. Wind power ensures a secure power supply, especially in winter, when electricity production from hydropower and photovoltaic systems decreases.

“Carinthia has the fourth-largest wind power potential of all Austrian federal states,” said Reinhard Draxler, CEO of Kelag. “Especially in the area of the state border with Styria there are usable wind power locations.”

Kelag is currently planning further wind farms in Carinthia. The administrative procedures for the Lavamünd wind farm, the Steinberger Alpe II wind farm in the municipality of St. Georgen im Lavanttal and the Peterer Alpe wind farm in the municipality of Reichenfels are running.
