On Sunday the temperatures in German-speaking Switzerland remained below freezing for the first time this winter.

The many Atlantic low pressure areas have been directing disturbances towards Switzerland for weeks. Sometimes a warm front brings mild air, then a cold front causes temperatures to drop once more. On Saturday another cold front will move towards the Alps, behind which icy polar air will reach us from the north.

Permanent frost on Sunday

Already on Saturday the maximum temperatures in German-speaking Switzerland were only just above freezing point. In many places the temperatures in the morning are slightly higher than in the followingnoon. It will be clear on Sunday night and it will cool to an icy -3 to -7 degrees by early Sunday morning. The sun dominates in the followingnoon. However, the low December sun can only warm the air a little and so in many places in German-speaking Switzerland there is the first ice day in a long time. Only in northwestern Switzerland can temperatures just above 0 degrees be possible.

Rare ice days

Days on which the temperature remains below freezing all day are called “ice days” in meteorology. In the Mittelland there are on average between 14 and 19 ice days per year between 1991 and 2020. Last winter, however, ice days were rare and so you sometimes have to look back in the climate statistics until you find the last day with permanent frost. This was the case in Buchs near Aarau/AG on December 18, 2022, in Schaffhausen on January 21, 2023 and at Zurich Airport on January 27, 2023.

Just a short cold snap

Monday night will be icy cold once more and temperatures will be around freezing during the day. The polar cold air is then driven away once more by the next Atlantic low pressure area.
