Firmware update for Panasonic’s GH6 supports SSD recording via USB!

In nuce: As editor John Aldred of diyphotography.net wrote in a 9/20 comment. this year reported that the firmware update Ver.2.2 for the Lumix GH6 has gone online. Since 27.09. the update is now available online. The new feature that Aldred thinks users should be most excited about is that it now also supports “direct recording and playback of videos/photos via an SSD with a USB connection,” as Panasonic’s related announcement states. According to Aldred, one of the main concerns of GH6 users to date has been that the device should be able to record directly to SSD.

In full: In his comment, Aldred addresses some of the technical specifications of the update. The most important of these are as follows:

  • Record to SSD with a maximum capacity of 2 TB with Apple ProRes 422 HQ (max. 1.9 Gbps) or 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra with high bit rate.
  • The new update limits the size of the SSD to 2TB, which Aldred says isn’t a huge limitation, in part because 1TB is the standard for USB SSDs these days, he writes.
  • A negligible downer: Simultaneous recording via SD card or CFexpress card slots – while recording on SSD – is not possible according to Aldred’s wording.
