Firing Up the Engine of Europe: Hungary’s Thriving Power Plant Landscape

MEKH is organizing the Night of Power Plants for the fifth time this year. On October 25, 2024, special locations and unique programs await visitors at the largest and most popular energy industry event in our country. The event is free, but registration is required, you can register from October 7 on this page.

The main goal of the main organizer MEKH is to draw attention to the fact that, in order to protect our environment, it is worthwhile to use our resources consciously by presenting the operation of energy and district heat production as well as public utility services.

Zsolt Scherer, MEKH spokesperson, highlighted the following at the press conference organized at FCC Magyarország Kft.’s regional waste management center in Gyáli: “At this year’s Power Plants Night, we are expecting around 5,000 visitors at 62 locations across the country, who will be able to get an insight into the behind-the-scenes work at power plants, heating plants and utility companies. This year, our joining partners will open the most diverse locations to visitors: the largest hydropower plants, gas power plants, state-of-the-art biomass heating plants, water reservoirs and water towers can be visited, but we can also learn about the operation of nuclear energy. Getting to know the technical background of electricity and district heat generation, water utility services and waste management promotes a change in attitude, which in the long term contributes to efficient and environmentally conscious energy use.”

During the Night of the Power Plants, visitors can learn about the interesting work and the operation of the equipment in power plants, heating plants, water utilities and waste processing plants with the help of expert guides. The hugely popular event attracts thousands of visitors every year. The organizers expect similar interest this year as well, that’s why it is worth registering for the popular locations as soon as possible.

The Professional Association of Hungarian District Heating Services (MaTáSzSz) is also joining the Night of Power Plants program this year, and is organizing the Day of District Heating Services on October 25, the same day as the event. At the press conference, Dr. Péter Orbán, general secretary of MaTáSzSz, said: “Renewable energy came into focus this year. The primary goal of the Association is to green the domestic district heat supply, in which biomass, geothermal energy, waste and the utilization of heat generated from industrial and technological processes play a significant role. In achieving this greening goal, the district heating sector is also significantly supported by the government, and we also proposed the relationship between district heating and renewable energy sources as the topic of our content creation application launched in connection with the 2024 District Heating Day.”

On October 25, district heating providers and district heat generators are waiting for visitors in many parts of the country with plant tours and community programs, details of which can be found on this page.

The Night of Power Plants is being promoted again this year by program producer Csaba Gyetván, the ambassador of the program, who before the event visited several locations that visitors can visit in person on October 25. Your favorite logins are available at on MEKH’s Facebook page.
