In Wallonia, no generalized ban like in Brussels. The rules vary depending on the municipality. Some cities, such as Namur, prohibit fireworks in public spaces but not in private spaces. Other municipalities, such as Herstal, prohibit fireworks everywhere, including in private gardens, unless they are managed by a professional fireworks specialist. It is therefore recommended to check with your municipality or local police station.
The Walloon government, for its part, encourages municipalities to regulate the use of fireworks on their territory. As part of the financial support that the Walloon Region grants to municipalities in favor of animal welfare, an additional 2,000 euros are thus granted to municipalities which implement specific actions, including the inclusion of provisions in municipal regulations aimed at prohibiting fireworks, with the exception of low-noise fireworks.
A few days before the end of year festivities, the Walloon Minister of Animal Welfare, Céline Tellier, also called on the federal government to put in place “uniform legislation which would better protect animals from these avoidable nuisances”.
“Loud and repeated detonations cause great stress to animals. The magic of the end-of-year holidays also means being able to find new solutions so that these moments are pleasant for everyone, including the animals.“, recalled Céline Tellier.
